Pedestrian Safety

Lately, I have noticed more and more drivers who don't seem to care about pedestrians. Apparently those who have automobiles have many more rights than those that do not. I have seen many a driver honk at, nearly hit, and just generally being rude to the pedestrians. Especially to those in cross walks. When I was in drivers education, I learned that pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way. Not when I felt like it, but always. If a kid ran out into the middle of the street to get a ball, I had to yield the right of way to them. And I think that is a fair assessment. Think about it. I am in a car and let's pretend that this car weighs 600 pounds (a gross under estimate) and I am traveling down the road at 25 miles per hour. A 150 pound man walks off the curb and is walking at 5 miles an hour (way too fast for walking). I hit him. Doing the math I realize that I weigh considerably more than him (with my car that is) and I am moving considerably faster than he is. According to the laws of physics, my car is going to win this battle. We need to be better drivers and prevent more pedestrians from getting hurt or killed by drivers. Slow down, be alert, and quit being a jerk. So what if it takes you an extra 5 minutes to get somewhere. It is a lot better than living with the fact you hit and possibly killed someone. Isn't it?
